ED Uncovers Cash-Filled Cupboards in Odisha's Ganjam During Illegal Mining Probe

The currency was found in cupboards at premises linked to Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and contractor Hrishikesh Padhi and his associates. The operations targeted approximately 20 locations, including residences of various traders in Berhampur, amidst allegations of tax evasion and large-scale financial irregularities. The probe is focused on an alleged nexus between the sand mafia, who reportedly obtained leases using fabricated documents, and politically connected individuals with criminal backgrounds. This ED action follows a recent Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that highlighted widespread illegal mining in the riverbeds of Rushikulya, Bahuda, and Bada rivers in Ganjam, causing substantial losses to the state exchequer.
